He has served two tours of duty in Iraq and was based inCamp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he earned the rank of Sergeant. Jamel has four children: Stephen, Ariyanah, Jamel, and Jazmyne. His daughter Ariyanah died July 27, 2009, fromSIDS. The opening ceremony of the2012 Olympic Gameswas the 3rd anniversary of her death.
